From the time stones were placed in the uteri of camels to ensure that they didn’t become pregnant during the long trek across the desert, objects placed in the uterus have saved many women from an undesired pregnancy. Modern intrauterine devices (IUDs) not only provide excellent “set it and forget it” reversible contraception but, depending on the type of IUD, other benefits such as lighter periods, suppressing endometriosis, providing emergency contraception, and reducing the risk of uterine cancer.

IUDs are most used by women between the ages of 25 and 35, but there are five reasons that a progestogen IUD should be in the perimenopausal and even post-menopausal toolbox.
